Man Is Charged With Violating Sex Offender Law, Lying To Officers
A Lawrenceburg man was arrested Friday after he allegedly violated the state Sex Offender Registry Law (SOR), and lied to officers on two separate days.
Donald Clayton Long, age 48, of 312 May Street was arrested on charges that include violation of the SOR, and giving false information to police officers.
Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an employee who handled the SOR matters for the department was sick and no one was available to fill in, therefore appointments had to be rescheduled.
They said they were able to get in touch with everyone on the list except Long. The phone numbers he had listed, reports show, were either not in service or had been assigned to a new customer.
On Tuesday, officers indicate that Long stopped by the police department. He told officers that he had changed his phone number that very day. They report that Long stopped by the station on Friday to, again, register a new phone number. Long told them that “he had already run out of minutes” on his other phone.
Officers felt that Long’s statement had been suspicious. They told him they found it hard to believe that he had obtained a new phone, used up all of his minutes, then obtained another new phone four days later.
When they asked him why he had not simply purchased more time rather than obtaining a new number, he admitted that he had lied to them. He told officers that he had had the number for about a month. He also admitted that he was aware that he had only forty-eight hours to register any new number.
Long was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was incarcerated under a bond of $3,000. He must appear in General Sessions Court on February 5, 2015.
